South East & West at the GSNP Championships
The GSNP Championships took place from 26 – 30th March and the Southend event was well represented by our players in the South West and South East regions. The Southend Championships started with 91 entries at the £100 freezeout on Wednesday the 26th of March, but saw three of our Poker in the Pub players playing their hearts out on the main tournament days – Thursday to Sunday. They were Frank Jones Sue Norsworthy and Jim Weekes.
The £500 tournament on the Thursday saw 84 runners, each starting with 10 000 chips, and Frank Jones. did us proud. Frank Jones started the main tournament, ready to go with his packet of sweets and cowboy hat in tow, seated at table 8. He warmed up to a slow start but was gradually stacking up the chips and by the break of the 1st day, was on 16 000 chips. He seemed to be enjoying himself and did very well by qualifying for Day 2 on the Saturday.
Frank had an above average chip stack throughout the Saturday and played against some stiff competition. He was placed 7th at the start of the day out of 64 runners which is a great achievement as the standard in Southend was high. However, he was card dead all day and he eventually ended 30th out of a total of 167 – something to be very proud of. After the tournament we had a little chat with him and he told us that if anything it has made him more determined and less nervous about the nationals. He felt if he could do that well against regular cash players and poker pros he should not have a problem in May. Laughing, he also told us that he would see me in Vegas which is a very positive outlook so hopefully Vegas is still on the cards for him.
Sue Norsworthy (featured in the December issue of Linving It Loving It) started well with a chip stack of 14,000, one hour into the game. Unfortunately towards the end of day 1B with 26 runners, she was eventually beaten. Sue felt that she was dealt bad hands for most of the tournament and was very disappointed to be knocked out. She played the best she could on the day and the rest I guess is up to chance. Well done to an ace effort and thank you for doing a great job of modeling our stylish branded t-shirts. We wish her the best of luck for the upcoming National Finals. Our last Poker in the Pub representative, Jim Weekes did very well playing on Day 1B. He managed to last most of the day but was unfortunately knocked out towards the end of the evening. The Southend tournament saw a couple of sporting celebrities show their skills off the field or pitch, including cricket player Nadeem Shahid, Glen Jackson, Chris Sheasby, Dan Scarborough and Henry Paul all rugby celebrities. Overall the experience for the Poker in the Pub players and the management team was memorable. Southend welcomed us with open arms and the Mint Casino was a really nice venue for the players.
Once again “well done” to Sue, Jim and Frank Final Table
