Salcombe Catches the Crime Wave

Saturday 30th October has certainly set tongues wagging in the delightful seaside town of Salcombe. Catch Italian restaurant hosted a Crime Scene Night from Living it Loving it entitled Trick or Treat. Priced at £22.50 per head (including any 2 courses) and with the exception of one late cancellation, the night was a sell-out for this lovely restaurant in beautiful Salcombe.

Even from the outside of the restaurant it was clear that there had been a serious incident within, indeed passers-by were asking all day what had happened, including 2 members of the Devon and Cornwall constabulary who were concerned that there was no record in their incident log of a major incident!

In the heart of the restaurant, and in front of the fireplace, there was a gruesome crime scene, complete with body outline, bloodied murder weapon and signs of a struggle. Food orders were taken (after teams had been organised) and then the crime scene investigation got under way to determine both perpetrator and motive.

The dynamics were fascinating as a restaurant full of people (each seated at their respective tables and who normally would not talk to each other) started interacting with each other to create a brilliant atmosphere. Even better was the sheer level of inter-team competition from the various tables (attempts to spread disinformation and rumours to put other teams on the wrong track only added to the entertainment value).

The night was run by the beautiful and bubbly Donna (suitably dressed as a lab technician whose style and presence owed much to Jane Tennison) and her husband Micha was also much in attendance as a wizard. The Trick or Treat crime scene night is set in a fancy dress party, so guests are encouraged to dress up, which many of the guests did.

Despite the challenge of maintaining concentration in the face of much laughter, the excellent food provided a major distraction (the author had a delicious pasta dish followed by a criminally good sticky toffee pudding) it was surprising how much we'd all taken in and could recall (although it was no surprise when the table of Geeks triumphed)!

The combination of great food, hospitality, and the company of some really great people in a restaurant full of strangers, made this a truly memorable dining experience, roll on the next one!
